Impact of the Issue
World history has always been marked by cycles of violence, irrespective of time, region or race. Genocide has always led to horrific socio-economic and environmental impacts, which is one of the worst forms of violence. The last decade of the 20th century was Rwanda's most turbulent history ever. Civil war, genocide, mass migration, economic crisis, diseases, refugee return, and environmental destruction have ravaged the country. Rwandan families have been affected by death, disease, disability, poverty, loss of dignity, and imprisonment, and are still dealing with impacts. This paper uses a geographical perspective to assess the environmental causes and impacts of the genocide in Rwanda, more specifically the geography of conflict, more than a decade after the genocide.
